Tips for a Safer Walk to Work

Walking to work has many benefits, both for you and the environment. Walking is a low-impact exercise that helps improve cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of chronic health issues, and improves overall fitness levels. As an added benefit, a stroll to work can reduce stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and give your brain cells a boost. Your wallet will thank you – walking saves money on gas, parking, and other car-related expenses. The environment will thank you, too. Walking is a sustainable way to decrease carbon emissions and air pollution. Commuting on foot can also help build a sense of community by allowing you to interact with other pedestrians and gives you a chance to explore your community.

However, as a pedestrian, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety. Here are just a few good tips for a safer walk to work:

  • Always use crosswalks and sidewalks. Avoiding the street reduces your chances of getting hit by a vehicle.

  • Look both ways before crossing the street. Yes, this is the tip your parents and teachers taught you as a child! It is very basic, but very important to look for oncoming traffic, even when you have the right of way.

  • Obey traffic signals, such as stop signs and traffic lights, to ensure that drivers can see you and to know when it's safe to proceed.

  • Be visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night, to make sure that drivers can see you.

  • Avoid distractions. Don't use your phone, listen to music, or engage in any other activity that might distract you while walking near traffic.

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times, and try to make eye contact with drivers to make sure they see you.

  • In fact, you should walk defensively at all times. Assume that drivers don't see you and be prepared to take action if necessary, such as stepping back onto the sidewalk or jumping out of the way of a vehicle.

Memphis is a great place to walk to work if you take the proper precautions to arrive safely!
