The Downtown Mobility Center Promises Great Things for Memphis
Parking is a major problem for many commuters, especially those who live in or commute to downtown Memphis. A new development at Beale and Main promises to bring relief to downtown parking – and much more.
In addition to providing much-need public parking, The Downtown Mobility Center will serve as a central hub for multiple modes of transportation, including public transit, bicycles, and pedestrians. The project is being developed by the Downtown Memphis Commission, in partnership with the City of Memphis, the Memphis Area Transit Authority, and other stakeholders, as a part of larger efforts to improve transportation options and access in downtown Memphis.
The Mobility Center is expected to enhance access to downtown Memphis, encourage sustainable transportation options, and promote economic development in the area. The multi-modal transportation hub will be a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will provide a range of services to commuters, including transit information, ticket sales, bike rental and repair, and retail and food options.
The Center will be a hub for public transit, with connections to the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) bus system, the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, and the Main Street Trolley. It will also feature a secure bike parking facility with lockers and showers, as well as a bike rental and repair shop. The site will also host about 11,000 square feet of retail space.
Benefits
A multi-modal transportation hub such as the Downtown Mobility Center can provide a range of community benefits, such as:
A central location where commuters can easily access multiple modes of transportation, including public transit, bicycles, and pedestrians. A multi-modal hub can improve mobility and accessibility for people across the community, including those who do not have access to a car.
By providing alternative transportation options, such as public transit and bike sharing, multi-modal transportation hubs can help reduce traffic congestion and decrease the number of cars on the road. This can lead to shorter commute times, less air pollution, and improved quality of life.
The Downtown Mobility Center can serve as an anchor for economic development for the city, attracting businesses and customers to the area.
By encouraging sustainable transportation options such as walking and biking, multi-modal transportation hubs can promote physical activity and improve public health, which may lead to reduced healthcare costs and increased productivity.
Multi-modal transportation hubs can serve as community gathering places and promote social interaction. The Downtown Mobility Center can also help connect people to other downtown amenities, such as parks, restaurants, events, and attractions.
Construction on the Downtown Mobility Center is expected to begin in 2022 and be completed in 2023.
