How to make Commuting Fun!

Commuting is often thought to be the “in-between” for activities: you commute because you simply need to get from point A to point B. Don’t get us wrong, commuting is about traveling between two points. But commuting can also be so much more!! Here are a few ways to make any commute fun.

Connect with Friends.

Whether you’re walking, biking, carpooling, or taking public transit, commuting is a great time to catch up with people! Grab some friends who have the same (or even similar) commutes and plan a route together! Life is busy, so use commuting as time to connect with friends. If you don’t have anyone to physically commute with, you can still use the time spent in transit to call that family member or friend you’ve been dying to hear from!

Find an Audiobook.

Over the past few years, audiobooks have seen a meteoric rise – and for good reason!  They are a great way to get the most out of your time even if you aren’t in a place where you can hold a physical book. The best part? You can access countless audiobooks for FREE on Libby thanks to Memphis Public Library. Grab some earbuds, find a book you’ve been interested in, and enjoy listening while you commute!

Learn a New Hobby.

If you are taking public transit, use the time to learn a new hobby! Bring a sketchbook and start drawing, grab some yarn and learn how to knit, or watch a how-to video for something you’ve been wanting to learn. Walking or Bicycling to work? You’ll need to be hands-free, but there are still options. For example, it’s the perfect time to learn a new language! There are a lot of podcasts out there designed to help you practice.

Relax.

Sometimes the most enjoyable activity is simple relaxation.! If you have a busy or fast-moving day, think of commuting as a time when things can slow down. Put your phone away, watch the world go by, and take a moment to yourself to relax and recharge.

The key to a fun commute is to start thinking of it as “me-time.” Is there something you’ve wanted to do that keeps getting pushed back because something more important always comes up? Protect your commute as a time when you can do exactly what you’ve been wanting to do, whether that’s connecting with loved ones, learning something new, or simply taking time to pause in the midst of your busy day.
