Commute Options for College Students
Finding the safest and most convenient way to get to school and around the neighborhood is a priority for all college students. This includes looking for ways to cut down on commute time and save money on gas. If you are looking for the best way to get to class and off-campus events, here are some options to explore:
University bike share programs
Are you looking for the perfect way to get across campus quickly, or to campus without the hassle of parking? Find out if your school has a bike share program. The University of Memphis has a program that allows students to rent bicycles for the semester at little to no cost. Rhodes College is in walking proximity to the Explore Bike Share station in Overton Park. Bike share programs offer a consistent and reliable mode of transportation that you can use any time.
Campus shuttle buses
Not up for pedaling to class? Some schools have shuttle buses that run routes all over campus. Others will take trips off school grounds to the grocery store or sporting events. If your campus housing is not close by, some routes will make the trek to those external locations. Taking advantage of these amenities is key to surviving the commuter college dynamic.
Carpooling with your learning community or roommates
Sometimes the best way to get to class is with the help of a friend. Having a buddy or two to share carpooling duties will help reduce the stress of finding parking, you will feel safer, and you can add in some time to grab a coffee on the way to class, too! Not to mention all the fun carpool karaoke that will come from it.
Groove On-Demand
Not everyone can afford to drop money on expensive Uber rides every day. Instead, try using the MATA resource Groove On-Demand. This option is perfect for students who are in school downtown or in the Medical District looking for an alternative means of transportation.
While this is not an extensive list of all the options at your disposal, these options are a great place to start. If you want to learn about some of the other ways to get to school, check out our blog where we have more information about bus routes, walking paths, and safety tips!
