Case Study: Ms. Maurise McCraw

For most Memphians, Maurise McCraw is better known as “The Job Lady.” If you’ve ever been to 201 Poplar, chances are you’ve met this Memphis legend…or at least heard her! The star of many news stories, memes, and more, she travels throughout the building asking people if they are looking for a job. Clutching flyers for a variety of employment opportunities, she won’t let anyone unemployed leave the building without first having a slew of options. For 38 years, Ms. Maurice has faithfully shown up to volunteer her time to the city.

In years past, her journey downtown started around 6:00 a.m.,  when she left her home just south of Midtown. She walked a few blocks to the nearest bus stop on Lamar Ave. About an hour later, she was at her stop directly in front of 201 Poplar. She spent the day inside, talking to anyone and everyone. When evening came, it was time to hop back on the bus and head home.

This routine became second nature for The Job Lady. With the help of MATA, she worked diligently to serve the city. But time passed and Ms. Maurise realized it was time to change her routine. Though she was still as active as ever, walking to the bus stop became a challenge, and Ms. Maurise needed a little more assistance getting on and off of the bus. That never stopped her from taking public transit!

Ms. Maurise now works her way downtown by utilizing MATAplus.

For the same fare as fixed-route buses, MATAplus is an ADA-compliant service for “individuals who cannot board, ride, or disembark from any vehicle on the fixed-route system without the assistance of another individual, or any individual with a disability who needs the assistance of a wheelchair lift or other boarding assistance device.” Each day, Ms. Maurise calls to schedule her rides for the next day. She can give the exact pickup and drop off point, and MATA will come directly to her. While it operates during the same times and in the same areas as the fixed bus system, you can also request locations outside the designated area for an additional fee.

MATAplus is the first paratransit system in Memphis, allowing individuals like Ms. Maurise to stay active and independent! With a little help, The Job Lady is still going strong, handing out job flyers and encouragement to all who cross her path.
