Bicycling Tips: Things to Carry with You

A good bicyclist  loves to be prepared. Bicycling comes with different challenges and needs than driving, so it helps to have a few things on hand that you might need. Nobody wants to get stuck on the road, caught in the rain, or arrive to work unprepared. Luckily, the solution is easy! Carry these things so you are always ready to go:

A Tool Kit. A simple tool kit designed for bicycles is always helpful to have on hand. You can find one that straps directly to the frame of your bike, making it an easy addition. Make sure your tool kit includes a tube patch kit, a portable air pump, and a bike multitool.  Many other items will be useful  to have, but these three are essential.

A Change of Clothes. Commuting to work? Don’t arrive sweaty! Bring a bag containing  your work clothes so you can change once you are there. Don’t forget about shoes! Do you wear heels to work? Instead of commuting in them, pack them in a bag. That said, you may find times when  you can commute in your final outfit – if your commute is short and the weather is pleasant, for example. If you do, it still helps to have a change of clothes just in case anything unexpected happens.

Witch Hazel. On the topic of avoiding sweat, witch hazel is one of our favorite secrets. Having some on hand is an easy  way to freshen up once you reach your destination. A dab of witch hazel eliminates sweat and leaves a pleasant smell.

Binder Clips. Ladies, this one is for you! If you wear a skirt or dress, binder clips are one of the most useful tools  to keep  handy. Use them  for weighing down your skirt while riding. As a bonus, they are also an efficient  way to attach additional things to your bike rack, pannier, or basket.

Rain Gear. As much as we sometimes wish we could, no one can control the weather. That’s why it is a good idea  to always have a light windbreaker with you. That way, you won’t panic when halfway through a commute and the rain starts coming down. Additionally, a seat cover for your bike is helpful to carry along in case you have to park your bike outside. This will ensure that when you get back on, you don’t have to sit on a wet seat!

A Bike Lock. A bike lock is one of the most important things you can carry! Never leave an unattended bike without locking it up first. We love a U Lock for the security it provides. A chain lock is also great if you want the flexibility to secure your bike to objects other than a bike rack as they aren’t always available.

Water. Don’t forget your water bottle! Even if it is a short distance, always carry water with you while bicycling. You never know when your ride might get extended, or you might need a break.

So, now that your bag is packed, you are ready to ride! Stay tuned for more information coming soon on how to carry all of these items  without being weighed down.
