How do I start a carpool?

You can use our Commute Community Forum to find friends, neighbors, and coworkers who live or work near you. You can inquire at work. Often, there are coworkers who would love to save money. You can also check out some of the carpool apps to help you get started.

What public transit options are available in the Memphis area?

Taking transit in Memphis is a great option. The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) provides bus service throughout the city. Check out their website for a Trip Planner, on their homepage. You can now also use transit apps like TransLoc Rider and Google Maps, to find out exactly what time the next bus will arrive and the best route to take to get to your destination. If I need more than one mode of transportation, is there an easy way to map my route?

Absolutely! Bike racks on buses are clear indicators that multimodal travel is becoming more and more popular. The Google Maps App allows you to navigate your commute on several modes of transportation in one trip.

What is a vanpool and how do I start one?

A vanpool is a van with five or more people who share the ride to work. You split the cost of gas and your or one of your fellow riders drive the van. Visit the Memphis Area Rideshare Program for more information.

Are walking and biking viable commute options in Memphis?

Yes! Memphis has invested in improved walkability and more safe streets. Memphis is a city with a bicycle-friendly culture that includes bike lanes on city streets, protected green lanes, bike racks, and bike shops. In fact, in 2012, Bicycling Magazine named Memphis its ‘most improved bike city.’

Is there a way to track my bus to ensure I’ll be on time for work?

Commuting by bus is especially easy with the TransLoc Rider app, which lets you quickly locate specific routes and stops and see the location of any bus in your vicinity.

If I use a Commute Options such as biking, transit or rideshare, how would I get home in the event of an unforeseen emergency?

The Emergency Ride Home Program provides transportation for registered participants in cases of unforeseen emergencies seven days a week and 24 hours a day. To register or get more details on this great program, go to Memphis Area Rideshare Program.
